Unhiddenness 19th May - 6th June 10

This exhibition showcases the most memorable works by Surat Osathanugrah, which focus on scene and people of Thailand. Beside being a historical record of old Bangkok, it is also a piece of art which Surat has beautifully framed each scene to capture these moments in the daily lives of people.

(Con)Front 12th Jun 2010 - 03th July 2010
Like glimpses into a visual diary, (Con)Front is an attempt to tackle both the conscious and the unconscious. These visual dialogues pin down the artist response to his environment and his relentless search for a sense of place and identity. Provocative and disquieting, minimal yet profound, the exhibition examines the deconstruction of memory and time, the human desire to project towards the future, but what comes out of the future is the past.

HanoiHaiku
19 June - 05 July
By Sherman Ong

Shown as a complete series for the first time in Singapore, these works were made in Hanoi, Vietnam during my residency with the Goethe Institut Hanoi. Presented like a visual Haiku, the works are intentionally left untitled; the juxtaposition of images produces their own narratives, temporal connections, and is open to many interpretations infused with the personal experiences of individual viewers.

John CLANG
BIOGRAPHY
Born 'Ang Choon Leng' in Singapore in 1973, CLANG acquired his distinctive moniker during national service, as his name badge read 'C L Ang'. In 1999, the multi-disciplinary artist and award-winning photographer relocated to New York. Whilst working with some of the biggest commercial names like Herm¨¨s, Nike, IBM and Godiva, he continues to develop a parallel artistic career by producing and exhibiting an acclaimed body of works in photography. From 2000 to 2006, CLANG was also the Photographic Director of the experimental design and image title Werk, a platform dedicated to supporting new talent and run by longstanding Comme des Garcons collaborator, Theseus Chan.

His photographic oeuvre reads like glimpses into a visual diary¡ªautobiographical, evocative, and often elliptical. The images revisit key themes that continue a dialogue between contemporary landscapes and the individual: Urban alienation and a personal search for a sense of place and identity; the provocative displacement of the individual through an anti-juxtaposition of contexts; the interrogation, and recovery of memory; and the passage of time and its documentation through the axis of space. Nuanced yet startling, simple yet profound; these 'images of the mundane' lifted from the flow of an ordinary existence, seep into the cracks of our collective consciousness-and tear it apart.

MinTio

BIOGRAPHY
Mintio was born in 1986 in Singapore. She began her practice as a fine art photographer while pursuing her Bachelors in Fine Art at the School of Art, Design and Media at NTU. As an artist, her work puts priority on the process as well as maintaining a high-level of craft in the execution of an image.

She believes that these are the key elements in the personalization her work. In her most notable series "Concrete Euphoria", Mintio works uses the large format camera to photograph urban landscapes around Asia.

Despite the discipline-oriented methodology, she allows chance, chaos and emotional impulse to be huge driving forces in her practice.

Zhao Renhui
BIOGRAPHY
Zhao Renhui is a multi-disciplinary Singaporean artist. An artist and almost zoologist, his practice investigates the different modes of the human zoological gaze, that is, how people view animals. He is interested in the history and development of the zoological gaze alongside social progress and mediation. His practice also investigates the different modes of knowledge production in contemporary archives.

In 2007, he was awarded a research grant by the Chelsea Arts Club in London for his photographic research work in Spain. He has also won awards for his work including the AOP Student Photographer Of The Year award in 2007 (UK), Emerging Artist Award (Singapore International Photography Festival 2008) and most recently The United Overseas Bank Painting of the Year Award, 2009 (Singapore).

His research work on different animal traps from around the world was selected as the winning project for the Sotiri International Prize for Emerging Photographers (2009). At the moment, he is working closely with the Institute of Critical Zoologists (ICZ) on a series of public exhibitions, presentations, performances and installations.

The artist and the Institute recently exhibited and received a special mention for their research in the inaugural Photo-Levallois in Paris, "We decided to go to the zoo but it was raining" and the 'Ark Project' at Pickfords House Museum in the United Kingdom during the Format International Photography Festival (2009).

His documentary work on tiger farming in China was also shown in Chobi Mela V Festival, Bangladesh (2009). Most recently, the artist presented a major project with The Substation, Singapore, "If a tree falls in the forest" with the support of The National Arts Council Singapore.

He was also selected to present his research work on animal memorabilia/souvenirs of the world in the recent Asia-Europe Foundation Emerging Artists Forum. A series of his work, "The Blind" was also selected to be the cover and feature of Portfolio catalogue, a contemporary photography publication in Britain.

He is currently attending the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum Artist's Residency Program in Japan.

Joel Yuen
BIOGRAPHY
Joel's works take on an experimental approach, with a strong emphasis on narration and conceptualization. In order to execute an idea manifestly, staged photography has become the apt choice of expression for the contemporary arts.

His ideas and inspiration stem from religion and religious art (Roman Catholic), where a deep sense of ideology is portrayed. After exploring different mediums and art genres, the crux of a finished piece of work is for it to convey a message that relates to the human psyche.

After winning the 27th UOB Painting Of The Year Award, Crowbar Gold and Best of Show for Photography 2008, and Third Place for the International Photography Awards (Special-Special Effects: Lonely Supper), Joel continues to pursue photography as a fine arts genre.

Recently Symbiosis won the Crowbar Silver for Photography, 2009. He is currently taking his BFA in Photography and Digital Imaging in Nanyang Technological University.
